To determine the size of an AN (Army-Navy) fitting, measure the outer diameter of the fitting's threads using calipers and then refer to an AN size chart to match the measurement to the corresponding AN size. AN fittings are typically measured in sixteenths of an inch, so an AN-4 fitting, for example, has a 4/16 inch (or 1/4 inch) thread diameter.
